We always get asked who is Jake? How did we end up here with a business on St. John? What’s our story?
Jake is our 8 year old son. When we opened Jake’s Restaurant, in 2008, our Jake was a 1 year old and it just seemed fitting to name the restaurant after him. The hubby’s name is Carl and I’m Shaun. Since we opened Jake’s, we’ve had another child. This time a girl, and her name is Abby. It’s a quick introduction but, that’s the family.
Carl is originally from Connecticut and came to St. John in 1999 in search of buying a boat to charter. He instead ended up buying a bar business named The Front Yard. The Front Yard was a dive bar with live music, pool tables, and late nights. I’m originally from California and came down here in 2000. I met Carl right away. My plan was to only stay and work for a season but, decided to stay longer to see where this new romance would lead. 5 years later Carl and I got married.
After 10 incredibly fun years at The Yard, our lease was up and the building needed to be torn down (we were literally holding it together in parts with duct tape). This put us out of a business and out of work. With a 1 year old we wondered what was next for us. Should we stay on St. John or should we go back to the states? With an infatuation for this island, we decided to stay right here in Love City. So, now the question was what are we going to do? We decided that we would try our hands in the restaurant business and opened
Now that we have a second child, everyone asks if we are going to change the name of the business to Jake and Abby’s? The answer is no, we are not changing the name. Instead, we are starting a subsidiary of Jake’s called You can read all about Abby’s Pantry here on our web site. We hope you try us at Jake’s Restaurant and enjoy the jelly from Abby’s Pantry during your stay on St. John.
